Surah Name: Al-A'raf Meaning:The Heights

  • Revealed at Makkah
  • The foundation of Islam is on the transparent belief in the Unity of Allah-SWT . The relationship between man and Allah-SWT is such that the former must present his needs only before Him-SWT display his utter humility and insignificance. The theme of the preceding Surah is further expanded here, with emphasis on the importance of the Prophethood because no one can, on his own, comprehend Allah-SWT's Magnificence. He-SWT is beyond human senses. Allah-SWT's Cognition is a feeling induced into the human heart, and this honour is conferred upon the subtle hearts of His-SWT Prophets-AS through Revelations. They distribute these blessings amongst their followers, through a process known as Tazkiyah. In other words, the heart that receives this light is purified and capacitated to comprehend the Divine Book and the Wisdom. Thus the cognition of the Prophet-AS‘s paves the way to the Cognition of Allah-SWT ’. This Surah discusses the importance of Prophethood, supporting it with both logical and chronicle evidence, in the light of history of the preceding nations and their Prophets"-AS their conduct and the end results thereof. Towards the end is the discussion on the Unity of Allah-SWT ’. Also listed are some of His-SWT ’ Commands to facilitate His-SWT Cognition through obedience

bismillah

Awalam yahdi lillatheena yarithoona alarda min baAAdi ahliha an law nashao asabnahum bithunoobihim wanatbaAAu AAala quloobihim fahum layasmaAAoon(a)

Does it not guide the people who inherit the land after its people, that had We-SWT willed, We-SWT would have afflicted them for their sins? And We-SWT have put a seal upon their hearts, so that they are bereft of hearing.

(7:100)

Tilka alqura naqussu AAalayka min anbaiha walaqad jaathum rusuluhum bi(a)lbayyinati fama kanoo liyuminoo bima kaththaboo min qablu kathalika yatbaAAu Allahu AAala quloobi alkafireen(a)

Those towns! We-SWT recount to you some of their tidings. Assuredly there came to them their Messengers-AS with evidences, but they were not such as to believe what they had first rejected. Thus Allaah-SWT put a seal upon the hearts of the infidels.

(7:101)

Wama wajadna liaktharihim min AAahdin wain wajadna aktharahum lafasiqeen(a)

We-SWT found no regard for Covenant in most of them; and most of them We-SWT found ungodly.

(7:102)

Thumma baAAathna min baAAdihim moosa biayatina ila firAAawna wamalaihi fathalamoo biha fa(o)nuthur kayfa kana AAaqibatu almufsideen(a)

Then We-SWT sent after them Musa-AS with Our-SWT Signs to Pharaoh and his chiefs, but they wronged them. Behold then what was the end of the corrupters like.

(7:103)

Waqala moosa ya firAAawnu innee rasoolun min rabbi alAAalameen(a)

And Musa-AS said: O Pharaoh! I am a Messenger-AS from the Rabb-SWT of the worlds.

(7:104)

Haqeequn AAala an la aqoola AAala Allahi illa alhaqqa qad jitukum bibayyinatin min rabbikum faarsil maAAiya banee israeel(a)

Incumbent it is upon me that I speak nothing concerning Allaah-SWT except the truth; surely I have brought to you an evidence from your Rabb-SWT; so let the Children of Israil depart with me.

(7:105)

Qala in kunta jita biayatin fati biha in kunta mina a(l)ssadiqeen(a)

Pharaoh said: if you have brought a Sign, forth with it if you are of the    truth tellers.

(7:106)

Faalqa AAasahu faitha hiya thuAAbanun mubeen(un)

Then he threw his rod, when, lo! It was a serpent manifest.

(7:107)

WanazaAAa yadahu faitha hiya baydao li(l)nnathireen(a)

And he drew forth his hand , it was white to the beholders.

(7:108)

In The Name of Allah-SWT the Most Gracious, The Most Merciful
SECRETS OF REVELATION:

The annihilated met their fate, becoming a great symbol of admonition for the coming generations. It is amazing how prosperous and most powerful nations possessing immense resources, wealth, grand palaces and mighty armies were seized by Divine Wrath because of their unending sins. Their destruction left nothing save a warning to mankind. So the people who followed in time and are now present are being addressed by this Book and the Message, that they must realize that Allaah-SWT is Omnipotent and can punish the sinful whenever He-SWT wants to. And they, too, like their predecessor will have to face the consequences of their misdeeds in the form of various calamities, or else the sealing of the hearts.

Effects of Deeds on Qulub

The door of the heart is closed for the truth, as explained by a saying of the Holy Prophet-SW; that indulgence in sin creates a black spot on the heart. Its repetition increases the extent of darkness, while persistent indulgence renders it completely black. This is the condition which has often been referred to as rust or a seal on the heart by the Quran. Then such people cannot respond to an invitation to piety, though their physical power of hearing is sound and functional. It has often been experienced that despite the best resources people remain without guidance. For instance, some of those who personally attended the Holy Prophet-SW sermons did not convert to Islam, and felt bored. This was because their Qulub had been darkened by their misdeeds and had developed aversion to truth. In this state, all the organs serve only for the fulfillment of physical needs. One perceives not that he was wrong and should repent and accept the truth. The majority of non believers displayed such attitude because of the seal on their hearts. And this majority consists of those who persistently indulge in sin. Similarly if a believer opts for disobedience, it is detrimental to his heart and he may end up renouncing Islam.

Those who get their hearts sealed are the ones who are dishonest and guilty of dishonoring the promise they made to Allaah-SWT on the Day of Covenant. Whenever they are faced with a difficult situation they promise Allaah-SWT that they would reform themselves if given another chance. But as soon as Allaah-SWT makes things easier for them, they revert to their evil ways.

Only Prophet can Inform on Allah-SWT's Attributes and Choice

Allah-SWT sent Prophet Musa-AS to the king of Egypt called Pharaoh, a title of all the rulers of that country. He took Allah-SWT's Message to Pharaoh, his chieftains and the scholars, together with clear manifestations and miracles. But they were arrogant to him as well as the Divine Message and Signs. And the world witnessed the disastrous end of these mischief mongers.

Prophet Musa-AS invited the attention of Pharaoh and introduced himself as the Messenger-AS of the Rabb-SWT of the worlds. In other words, sending Messengers-AS is indeed befitting to His-SWT Providence. A Prophet-AS cannot possibly associate anything false with Allaah-SWT The Prophet-AS‘s are always innocent and trustworthy and are blessed with the knowledge of His-SWT Being and His-SWT Attributes, or Likes and Dislikes directly by Him-SWT . Therefore, a Prophet-AS’s will never speak anything concerning Allaah-SWT save the truth. And anyone who invents his own rituals taking them to be a source of reward or punishment has certainly lied about Allaah-SWT .

He told Pharaoh and his chieftains that he had also been blessed with miracles by Allah-SWT, by the One Who-SWT is also their Rabb-SWT and desires to reform them. Therefore, it was best for them to keep away from disbelief, polytheism and atrocities against the oppressed community of Bani Israil, who should be given freedom and permitted to go with him so that they could live in peace. The Pharaoh demanded the manifestation of a miracle as a token. Although Prophet Musa-AS was bestowed with many miracles but the two most prominent were the transformation of his staff into a big serpent and his hand, which glowed at his discretion. It is a Divine Way to bless the Prophets-AS with miracles commensurate with the skills and the arts possessed by the people unto whom they are sent. A high standard of sorcery and magic were the hallmark of the Pharaoh's era. Therefore, Prophet Musa-AS was blessed with miracles that established his supremacy over the magicians. He threw the staff and it turned into a big serpent, and took out his hand from his armpit and it was so bright as to illuminate the entire surroundings.
